Red Painted Slide Lid Spice Box ca 19th cent

$0.00

SIZE
5 × 9 1/2”

DESCRIPTION
Dovetailed construction with original red paint and patina. 9 interior cubicles. Note spring latch lock. WARNING! This box will not open unless you poke any sort of long narrow object down into the lid hole to disengage the wooden spring latch. (If you do this it opens easy-peasy; if you don’t do this it’s impossible to open). Clearly, someone wanted to evade the spice-larcenists.

CONDITION
19th century repairs consisting of two cut nails on top and perhaps several others elsewhere. (It’s a good bet someone tried to open this without properly engaging the spring latch). Otherwise good, solid, and original.
