American Folk Art WC Portraits By James Herring 19th century
SIZE
Man is 7 ½ x 9 1/4 ” (sight); Lady is slightly larger.
DESCRIPTION
James Herring 1794-1867, NYC. An important non- academic American portrait artist with works in the National Portrait Gallery, Met, and other seminal American museums. Herring is better known for use of oil on canvas— tho WC pieces are known. For an example of the latter, see plates 217 and 218 in the Unidentified Artists Section, 1981 publication American Folk Portraits (Abby Aldridge Rockefeller Collection). Unsigned but obviously by the same artist.
Possibly original glass and frames with morticed corners— albeit there is variance between the frames. Unidentified sitters are obviously husband/wife similarly posed in New York “bamboo” turned chairs circa 1815-20. The single line peripheral border is possibly a diagnostic horizon marker for Herring’s WC portraits.
CONDITION
Small relatively innocuous repairs of paper flaws. Otherwise original and sturdy.
