DESCRIPTION
James Hogeland emigrated from Virginia to Tippecanoe County Indiana in 1842. He established a woolen mill in 1850 on the west bank of the Wabash River and Erie Canal. While Hogeland Mill manufactured a variety of textile Jacquard coverlets were rare and likely only made to order. According to Pauline Montgomerie (Indiana Coverlet Weavers 1972: pp. 59) the Jacquards were likely woven by Thomas Jackson who resided with the Hogelands. The only Hogeland example found during the Montgomerie research project was similar to this one— ie., one-piece with urn and flower boarder; floral oval medallions with large 8-point stars. Signed Hogeland coverlets are extremely rare.

CONDITION
Relatively thick and heavy; several small innocuous stains visible on the light side. No holes, attrition. or repairs. Shows little evidence of use. Rarely washed (if ever). Very well cared for.
