DESCRIPTION
Lehigh County Geburts und Taufschein. William Grimes is a rare maker for whom I could find no comps other than this one, a 1980s plate in Earnest and Earnest, Papers for Birth Dayes pp. 333 which also mentions three others including Hornung plate 2638. The latter is nearly identical to this one. The circa 1840 cleat-morticed cherry frame (Pennsylvania) and wavy glass was likely first frame. Earlier curation by folding clearly evident.
NY Met Museum has curated several 1830s PA textiles assn w/ the name Wm Grimes; Also note that name and date of this Fraktur corresponds with Renown CT ex Georgia slave/poet Wm Grimes. (At least ought to be considered). In any case additional research is warranted probably starting with making PC with the appropriate Met curator. (good luck with that).
CONDITION: Poor conservation used Scotch Tape. (also faintly evident in Papers for Birth Days). Recently professionally conserved via removal of plastic tape and adhesive, deacidification of the paper, and application of acid-free tabs to stabilize tears which were far less extensive that the plastic tape.
