Civil War era Isinglass Candle Lantern dated 1865

$0.00

SIZE
4 x 3 x 5 1/4 in tall

DESCRIPTION
Minor's patent 1865 folding lantern with original isinglass glazing, Japanned finish and gold stencil design. The item is designed to collapse down to a small pocket sized square. What an interesting little contraption! The mica lenses (thin sheets of mineral mica) are lighter, more flexible, and heat resistant than glass. The back door opens to reveal a little candle and match holder as well as access a swiveling candle holder whose handle protrudes thru the door.

While I couldn't find any specific info who Mr Minor was or where he worked I did manage to find an interesting entry in the journal Scientific American for 1865. (see last photo). This is a decorative as well as interesting historic object worthy of further research.

This is one of several antique lanterns recently acquired from a fine estate lighting collection.

CONDITION
Well used but excellent. The pictures tell the story.
