Antique English Stumpwork Needlework Picture c. 1660

$0.00

SIZE
13 x 18 (sight) 16 x 20 1/2 w/ frame

DESCRIPTION
Extraordinary piece of early needlework. As with the best 17th cent stumpworks the subject is a biblical allegory. (This one, Genesis 24, Isaac and Rebecca)  There are many varieties of stitching and embroidery, several are raised relief. The tallest is the center ring which is comprised of tightly coiled metal wire woven around cotton batting. Appropriately mounted in early frame.

CONDITION
While most of the actual stitchery is present and intact, the ground on this one is silk rather than linen and it had become brittle and deteriorated in places. Conservation involved deacidification and stabilization by laying down and securing the needlework to newer foundation. The piece is structurally sound and decorative. Priced accordingly.
