SIZE

DESCRIPTION
School of Thomas Chambers. Oil on chamfered poplar board. Original American frame is circa 1840s. Very naive rendering with vibrant color.

The SS Great Britain was an historically important ship and caused a big stir worldwide when launched in 1843. The longest passenger ship at the time and first iron hull ship with a screw propeller. Originally 6 masts it was refit to 4 masts in 1853. So what we have here is an early pre 1850 rendering of the ship. I have enclosed several historic portraits-- one at time of launch; the second after refitting for four masts.

The ship was restored in the 1990s and set up as a dry dock museum in Bristol. (last photo). Check Wikipedia for more info on this ship. Interesting stuff.

CONDITION
All in all excellent condition. Minor imperfections and no restoration. See all photos.
